Chicago Public Schools, the American Bottling Company, Roosevelt University and the Office of the City Treasurer are jointly sponsoring their annual Hispanic Heritage Month Essay Competition. All CPS high school students are invited to participate.
The topic for the essay competition is: The motto of the United Farm Workers, founded by Latino leader and non-violent activist Cesar Chavez, is “Sí, se puede!” (Yes, it can be done!). What does this motto mean to you personally and what person of Hispanic descent, in your opinion, most exemplifies these words? Students are eligible to win:
Grand prizes:
-Four laptop computers and printers will be awarded to each of the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade students responsible for the top essay in their grade level.
-A $5,000 Roosevelt University scholarship will be awarded to each of the Grand Prize winning students. Students using the scholarship must meet Roosevelt University admission criteria.
Rules for the competition and an entry form are available at each high school or they may be downloaded here. Completed essays should be submitted to the competition coordinator at each school by October 12, 2010. Essays will be judged on originality and creativity, cultural knowledge and research, organizational structure and clarity, as well as spelling and grammar.
